MHQ: The Quarterly Journal of Military History (1998)
Robert Shurtlieff was a good soldier who served honorably in the 4th Massachusetts Regiment during the American Revolution. So, of course, did many of Robert's comrades. What truly set Shurtlieff apart was the young private's real name: Deborah Sampson. The untold story of Deborah Sampson Garnett, the first woman to serve as a regular, uniformed soldier in the nation's armed services, and whose pension was secured through the intermediary work of Paul Revere, appeared in MHQ in 1998.
